Equine TherapyHorse-Assisted Healing
Our signature differentiator. Experience the profound therapeutic benefits of horses for emotional regulation, mindfulness, PTSD recovery, and transformative healing.
Why Horses Heal
Horses are uniquely powerful healing partners. As prey animals with highly developed social awareness, they possess an extraordinary ability to sense and mirror human emotions in real-time. This creates an immediate, honest feedback loop that accelerates emotional awareness and healing in ways traditional talk therapy cannot match.
Non-Judgmental Presence
Horses don't judge past mistakes or social status. They respond only to your present emotional state, creating a safe space for authentic expression and vulnerability.
Emotional Mirroring
With heart rates that sync with humans nearby, horses reflect your internal emotional state externally. This biofeedback helps you recognize patterns and regulate emotions.
Present-Moment Connection
Horses live entirely in the present. Working with them naturally anchors you in the now, reducing anxiety about the future and rumination about the past.

Our Equine Therapy Modalities
We offer multiple approaches to equine-assisted healing, each designed for specific therapeutic goals. Our EAGALA-certified therapists work alongside clinical psychologists to create a personalized treatment plan.
Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP)
Ground-based sessions where horses act as co-therapists. Clients engage in activities like grooming, leading, and obstacle courses while a licensed mental health professional facilitates processing of emotions, behaviors, and patterns that emerge. Ideal for trauma recovery, anxiety, depression, and relationship challenges.
Therapeutic Riding & Hippotherapy
Mounted therapy sessions that use the rhythmic movement of the horse to improve physical, cognitive, and emotional functioning. The three-dimensional movement of a walking horse stimulates the rider's pelvis in a motion similar to human walking, making it particularly beneficial for neurological conditions and trauma stored in the body.
Equine-Facilitated Mindfulness
Meditative practices in the presence of horses, including herd observation, synchronized breathing, and silent connection exercises. Horses' natural mindfulness creates a contagious state of presence that deepens your own practice and awareness. Perfect for stress reduction and emotional regulation.
Equine-Assisted Family Therapy
Family members work together with horses to improve communication, rebuild trust, and strengthen bonds. The horse's feedback provides neutral, real-time insight into family dynamics, helping members recognize patterns and practice new ways of relating.
Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL)
Experiential learning focused on personal development skills like confidence, leadership, communication, and problem-solving. Unlike psychotherapy, EAL is educational and focuses on skill-building rather than mental health treatment. Excellent for neurodivergent individuals and executives seeking personal growth.
Our Therapy Horses & Expert Team
Not every horse is suited for therapy work. Our equine partners are carefully selected and trained for their calm temperament, emotional sensitivity, and natural attunement to humans. They undergo ongoing evaluation to ensure they remain willing, healthy partners in the therapeutic process.
Our Therapy Horse Standards
- Temperament Tested: Calm, patient, and naturally curious about humans
- Health Certified: Regular veterinary evaluations and optimal physical condition
- Professionally Trained: Specialized training in therapeutic environments
- Ethically Managed: Horses choose to participate and can opt out of sessions
- Well-Cared For: Spacious pastures, quality nutrition, and enriching herd life
EAGALA-Certified Therapists
- Licensed Mental Health Professionals: Clinical psychologists, LCSWs, and trauma specialists
- EAGALA Certification: Global standard for equine-assisted psychotherapy excellence
- Equine Specialists: Horse professionals trained in safety, behavior, and welfare
- Team Approach: Mental health professional and equine specialist work together
- Ongoing Training: Continuous education in trauma, neuroscience, and equine welfare
What makes EAGALA certification the gold standard? The Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) model requires a team of three: a licensed mental health professional, a certified equine specialist, and the horse(s). This team approach ensures both psychological expertise and equine welfare are prioritized. Unlike recreational horseback riding programs, EAGALA focuses on ground-based activities and does not require prior horse experience from clients.
What's Included
The Transformative Experience
Equine therapy at SANTVLANA is not a luxury add-on. It is the foundation of our healing philosophy. Integrated into every program, equine sessions accelerate breakthroughs, deepen self-awareness, and create lasting change in ways that surprise even skeptical clients.
Week 1: Connection
Meet the horses, learn their language, and begin building trust. Most clients are surprised by how quickly horses sense their emotions and how safe they feel in their presence.
Week 2: Awareness
Patterns become visible. Horses mirror your internal state, helping you recognize defense mechanisms, avoidance behaviors, and opportunities for growth you couldn't see before.
Week 3: Integration
Practice new ways of being. With horses as guides, you experiment with boundaries, communication, and leadership. Insights become embodied changes you take home.
"I came skeptical about horses. I left transformed. The horses saw parts of me I had hidden for years. Working with them gave me permission to be vulnerable again—and that changed everything."
